The Triumph Spitfire was introduced in 1962 with the design coming from the Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti. The mk1 is the rarest and most sought-after version of the Triumph Spitfire range, with many unique MK1 details like the door handles, the windscreen frame without rain gutters, the fully painted dashboard frame, etc. This car was restored by the Spitfire mk1-3 register secretary of the Club Triumph Holland to the highest standards, using as much original NOS Stanpart parts as possible.
The car was imported from sunny California around 15 years ago. The climate in California was mild to the car, which can be seen on the Spitfire’s bodywork with the original spot welds still existing. Almost all panel work is still original. Only the floor plates had some rust, these were replaced together with the inner sills. The doors have new door plates, after the door frames had been shot blasted and painted with epoxy primer. All other parts of the body were completely rust free, and needed no welding at all. This applied also to the bonnet, the rear wings, the windscreen frame and the front valance. All were 100% rust free. After being heated in a pyrolite heat oven, the full body was mildly blasted and then protected with epoxy primer. The chassis benefitted from the same treatment. Ultimately everything was painted in the correct color, Triumph White code 19. All other parts of suspension were shot blasted and were then powder coated. To prevent the car from future corrosion, the car was fully rust protected.
All technical components of the Spitfire were overhauled and reconditioned. The 1147 cc. engine, the gearbox and D-type Laycock de Normanville overdrive and differential were all professionally restored to the highest standards, including a lead-free conversion to the cylinder head. The twin SU HS2 carburetors are also restored, with the throttle spindles now running on Teflon bearing bushes. The propshaft is overhauled, as is the full brake system where the calipers had stainless steel pistons fitted, completed with Goodridge stainless steel brake hoses. The drive shafts are fully restored, checked on straightness and equipped with new bearings and UJ’s. The radiator was restored and fitted with a new core, also the rare Spitfire mk1 header tank was restored. New Koni shock absorbers were fitted all round, a NOS 1980’s original TriumphTune (the successor of Triumph’s factory tuning entity SAH) spaghetti exhaust manifold (as fitted to the Triumph Spitfire4 mk2) is fitted, followed by a full standard Spitfire mk1 exhaust system in stainless steel.

The full interior was done. A NOS Stanpart dashtop cover was fitted, the seats were overhauled and newly upholstered, and a moulded carpet set plus new door cards were fitted. All dashboard instruments were professionally overhauled and the overdrive switch is also correct, so steering column mounted. The car was fitted with a new softtop, placed on a NOS Stanpart softtop frame. An original Stanpart tonneau cover comes with the car, as is an original hardtop. To give some extra contrast, the hardtop is painted in a slightly darker Triumph color. The hardtop has new, black rooflining fitted.

The Spitfire is equipped with the correct rare, original Formula steering wheel that could be ordered from factory in 1964. A purist will notice that this Spitfire is now equipped with Triumph Vitesse wheels, which are identical to the original wheels except that they are 1 inch wider, with Michelin Classic series tyres all round.

This 56 year old Spitfire is in fantastic condition and will offer many, many years of joy to the new owner.
